How Riders Qualify for the SuperMotocross Playoffs

Riders qualify for the SuperMotocross Playoffs through combined performance in AMA Supercross and AMA Pro Motocross. The system rewards an entire season rather than using one discipline or one race as the only path into the postseason.

Combined points create the SMX standings

Points earned during the Supercross season are added to points earned during the Pro Motocross season. Separate combined standings are maintained for the 450 and 250 classes.

This means a rider can strengthen a postseason position in several ways: consistent results across both series, an exceptional run in one discipline or a late-season surge during the outdoor championship.

Direct qualification and seeding

The highest-ranked eligible riders in the combined standings are seeded directly into the postseason field. Their order also determines the seed points they receive when the championship totals are reset.

The reset preserves an advantage for the regular-season leader without allowing months of accumulated points to make the short postseason meaningless.

The last-chance path

Eligible riders outside the direct-seed positions may compete for the remaining main-event gates through a Last Chance Qualifier. Race winners who meet the season’s eligibility provisions may also receive a route into that qualifier even when their combined ranking is lower.

Why racing both disciplines matters

A rider who skips a large part of Supercross or motocross gives up opportunities to build combined points. A specialist can still qualify with strong enough results, but competing successfully across both schedules provides the most reliable route to a favorable seed.

Qualification rules can change

Field size, injury provisions and last-chance eligibility can be revised between seasons. Use this article to understand the structure, then verify the current rulebook and bulletins through the official SuperMotocross website.
