The SuperMotocross postseason crowns champions in two divisions: 450SMX and 250SMX. The class names refer to the motorcycle categories, but they also represent different stages in a professional rider’s career.
What is the 450SMX class?
450SMX is the premier SuperMotocross division. It draws its field from riders competing in 450SX during Supercross and the 450 class during Pro Motocross.
The class generally includes the sport’s most established professionals. The motorcycles produce substantial power, but championship success still depends on starts, technical execution, endurance and the ability to adapt to changing track conditions.
What is the 250SMX class?
250SMX combines leading riders from the 250SX East and West regions with the national 250 motocross class. It is widely viewed as the development division, but it is not a beginner category. Its field consists of full professional racers competing for a major championship.
Why the 250 class uses regional Supercross points
During the stadium season, 250SX is divided into East and West schedules. Both regional championships feed the combined 250SMX standings. When Pro Motocross begins, those riders compete together in one national 250 class before the postseason field is finalized.
Do both classes use the same playoff structure?
Both classes use the same basic progression: regular-season results establish combined standings, leading riders receive direct seeds, and postseason points increase from the opening playoff through the final. Each SMX event uses two motos to establish the overall result.
Can a rider compete in both classes?
Riders normally commit to the class for which they are eligible and qualified. Career progression commonly moves a successful 250 rider into the 450 class, but class eligibility and advancement rules govern when and how that transition occurs.
