The SuperMotocross World Championship connects the indoor Supercross season and outdoor Pro Motocross season with a short postseason. It rewards year-round performance while leaving enough points available for the title to be decided at the final.

How SuperMotocross came about
Two disciplines, one season-long narrative
For decades, AMA Supercross and AMA Pro Motocross crowned separate champions. Feld Motor Sports and MX Sports Pro Racing announced a unified SuperMotocross structure in 2022, creating a common season framework and a postseason designed to identify riders who can succeed across both stadium and outdoor racing.
The inaugural 2023 season
The first SuperMotocross postseason was held in 2023. Hybrid tracks combined features associated with both disciplines, and separate 450SMX and 250SMX championships were awarded. The existing Supercross and Pro Motocross titles remained intact.

How SuperMotocross playoff points work
Build combined points
Riders accumulate points during Supercross and Pro Motocross. Those totals determine eligibility and postseason seeding.
Reset to seed points
Before the postseason, the leading combined-points riders receive a reduced seed-point total. The top seed starts with an advantage, but the title remains open.
Progressive playoff scoring
Playoff 1 awards standard points, Playoff 2 awards double points and the championship final awards triple points.
Who qualifies?
The leading riders in the combined standings are seeded directly into the playoff main events. Eligible riders outside the direct-transfer positions can contest a last-chance qualifier for the remaining gate spots. Exact field and eligibility rules can change, so the official playoff information should be checked for the current season.
How each SMX event is scored
Each class races two motos. Olympic-style finishing scores determine the event overall, and championship points are then awarded from that overall result. Because the final carries triple points, one late result can create a large championship swing.
