Understanding SuperMotocross playoff points starts with one important distinction: the points riders earn during Supercross and Pro Motocross determine postseason qualification and seeding, but they do not simply carry into the playoffs at full value.
Step 1: Riders build combined SMX points
Throughout the regular season, riders earn points in Supercross and Pro Motocross. Those results are combined into the season-long SMX standings for each class.
This rewards riders who compete across both disciplines. A strong stadium season can establish an early advantage, while a productive summer can dramatically improve a rider’s playoff seed.
Step 2: The standings establish playoff seeds
Before the postseason begins, the leading riders are assigned reduced seed-point totals based on their combined ranking. The regular-season leader begins with the best seed, but the compressed totals keep the championship competitive.
Step 3: Points increase during the playoffs
- Playoff 1: standard event points
- Playoff 2: double event points
- Championship Final: triple event points
The escalating system gives regular-season consistency real value without allowing a large early lead to remove all uncertainty. It also means the final round can produce major swings in the championship standings.
How an SMX round produces an overall result
Each class contests two motos. Finishing positions from those motos are used to determine the event overall, and championship points are awarded based on that overall result. A rider therefore has to manage two starts and two races rather than relying on one main event.
Why every position matters
A single position can matter twice: first in determining the overall result and again in the championship points attached to that overall. The later the postseason gets, the more costly a poor finish becomes because of the multiplied points.
