Supercross, motocross and SuperMotocross use similar motorcycles and feature many of the same elite riders, but they are not three names for the same competition. Track design, race format and championship purpose distinguish each discipline.
What is Supercross?
Supercross takes place primarily inside stadiums on purpose-built dirt tracks. Courses are compact and technical, with whoops, rhythm lanes, triples and bermed corners. Short lap times put riders in traffic frequently and make starts especially important.
A typical race program advances riders through timed qualifying, heat races and last-chance qualifying before the main event. The premier 450SX class contests a national championship, while 250SX riders compete in East and West regional championships.
What is motocross?
Motocross is outdoor racing on longer natural-terrain courses. Elevation changes, changing soil, deep ruts, braking bumps and increasingly rough conditions make endurance and adaptation central to the discipline.
Professional motocross events normally use a two-moto format. Results from both motos determine the overall winner, so a rider must produce two strong races across a physically demanding day.
What is SuperMotocross?
SuperMotocross is the umbrella championship connecting the Supercross and Pro Motocross seasons with a postseason. SMX playoff tracks blend elements of stadium and outdoor racing, and the postseason crowns separate 450SMX and 250SMX champions.
